INTRODUCTION TO INDOTERM: AN INTER-REGIONAL CGE MODEL OF THE INDONESIAN ECONOMY
INTRODUCTION
Indonesia is one of the largest archipelagos that has undergone rapid economic progress yet still left big inter-regional disparity. The large gap in the development outcomes between regions coupled with a widening income gap between the rich and the poor have raised serious concern over the quality of the economic growth the country has achieved. Various initiatives including government policies and directives to narrow the gap have been attempted. MP3EI program, for example, is among many important directives that the current government initiated.
Attempt to improve inter-regional economic equality requires not only understanding the different economic characteristics of each specific region, but also how all regions connect among each other through trade and factors of production mobility. The complexity of such relationship requires an economic tool that integrates both theoretically consistent framework of how the Indonesian economy including its different regions works as well as an information and data which is consistent with the economic theories and how interaction among economic agents and regions in a real word. An inter-regional computable general equilibrium model is an analytical tool that can help analyze various issues of interrelationships among regions that are both has consistency in economic theory and empirical data. IndoTERM model is one of the class of such model developed by renowned worldwide national and international expert yet has not been fully utilized in the academic and the policy making arena.
OBJECTIVES
The general objective of this training is to introduce, familiarize its use, and equip the participants with the IndoTerm model to be used in policy-oriented research. It is expected that after the training, the participants:
- Understand the basic concept, theoretical foundation, data construction, and assumptions of the IndoTerm model for a better understanding of what the model can be used for.
- Are familiar with how to use the model to perform various relevant simulations and interpret their results.
- Understand the role of economic models like IndoTerm in improving the analytical quality of government policies or directives on the issue of connectivity in Indonesian in particular or regional development in general.
