“Natural Resources, Environment and People’s Welfare in Decentralized Indonesia”

The 11th Indonesia Regional Science Association (IRSA) International Conference was conducted in Banjarmasin on 9-11 July 2012. IRSA conferences are the main and largest conferences for social scientists working on development in Indonesia. Discussion on these conferences set directions on research activities in Indonesia in years to come. Budy Resosudarmo from Indonesia Project is the current IRSA’s president. This year’s theme of the conference is Natural Resources, Environment, and People’s Welfare in Decentralised Indonesia. This event was held at Mercure Hotel, Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan and attended by approximately 250 participants.
Among notable speakers from this Conference is Siddarth Chandra, Director of Asian Studies Centre from Michigan State University. Iwan Jaya Azis from ADB spoke on the impact of global recession on Indonesian economy, while Bambang Brodjonegoro, Head of Fiscal Policy Office, Ministry of Finance Republic of Indonesia, spoke on fiscal policy. Rachmat Witoelar, Indonesia’s special envoy on climate change gave a talk on climate change policy in Indonesia. Several ANU post graduate students linked with Indonesia Project also attended this conference, including Erick Hansnata and Dewa Wisana.
